What is brow tinting?

Egyptians are credited with being among the earliest practitioners of hair dyeing(circa 3000 - 30 BCE). They used natural substances like henna, a plant-based dye, to color their hair. Henna provided a reddish-brown tint and was often used for ceremonial and aesthetic purposes.

Both ancient Greeks and Romans engaged in hair coloring practices as well (8th century BCE - 5th century CE). They utilized a variety of natural substances, including plant extracts, minerals like iron and copper, and even animal fats, to achieve different hair colors. These dyes were often mixed with oils or other mediums to create desired shades.

What used to be a more natural and artistic process, today we find these components in hair dyes: Pigments, Developer (Oxidizing Agent), Alkalizing Agent, Conditioners and Emollients, Stabilizers and Thickening Agents, Preservatives, Fragrance, Surfactants, Buffering Agents, Antioxidants.

"But mayara, what does this have to do with brow tint?" Everything! The tint we know today, suitable for brows and lashes, with less chemicals, safe to use specifically around the eyes came from adapting the hair dye, which is extremely old.

I know you've already witnessed someone dyeing their hair at home and accidentally leaving their skin stained, we don't know who, but they had the idea of using this on their eyebrows as well, and nowadays we use this stain to help cover gaps, balance asymmetries and create the shape we want for the brows professionally.
