What are PowderBrows?

Updated: May 25, 2024

The PowderBrows we know today are achieved using a tattoo machine at a slow speed, allowing the needle to fill the skin with small dots, which we refer to as pixels. It provides a makeup-like look, but not as heavy as the old technique called shadow. However, to arrive at this point, the initial invention took place in 1876, 147 years ago.

Here the timeline:

1876: Thomas Edison invents the electric pen, which is initially used for duplicating documents. It operates on the principle of a reciprocating needle. 1891: Samuel O'Reilly modifies Edison's electric pen to create the first tattoo machine. It includes a tube and needle system, and is capable of inserting ink into the skin. This design is still the basis for modern tattoo machines. 1929: Percy Waters makes improvements to O'Reilly's design, adding an on/off switch and an adjustable needle bar. 1970s: Carson Hill introduces a pneumatic tattoo machine that uses compressed air to operate, which reduces noise and vibration compared to electric models. 1978: Manfred Kohrs invents the first rotary tattoo machine. This design uses a rotating motor to drive the needles, in contrast to the traditional coil-driven machines. 1980s-1990s: Various artists and inventors make improvements to coil machines, refining their design and making them more versatile. 2000s: Tattoo machine technology continues to advance with the integration of digital components, allowing for more precise control and customization. 2010s: Wireless tattoo machines become more prevalent, utilizing lithium-ion batteries for cordless operation.

Present: Innovations in materials, motors, and control systems continue to evolve, leading to more efficient, quiet, and versatile tattoo machines.
